    I want a great coat for home guard events what type do I want I need to know specifics so I don't end up buying the wrong one haha

    Most of them have a label inside. If it says 1955 pattern then you don't want it Wink

    I think there was an article on greatcoats on the WW2 forum, have a search. Or perhaps a clothing connesseiur like Barry will come along knowing the answers. I know there are some differences, but not exactly what. One with a hole in the side on the left will be officers, for the sword handle.

    Yea pretty easy to spot even without a label 8 buttons usually brass up the front, later design had a pleat up the back.

    39 patt had no pleat. 40 patt had pleat as did 50s pattern. Its the bottons arrangement on front thats the giveaway, although I think the 50s one had concealed buttons on the rear skirt rather than button through. I sold a 40s one not long ago, but may have a serviceable one left with out buttons though.
